St. Petersburg is the northernmost major city of the world. It is located at 59°57' degrees North, 30°19' degrees East. The city's area equels 606 square kilometres. 1439 square kilometres with suburbs.
Due to the city's northern position it enjoys the phenomenon of the "White Nights", lasting from May 25-26 till July 16-17. July 22, the Solstice Day, is the longest day (18 hours 53 minutes); the shortest day is December 22 (5 hours 52 minutes).
The climate is humid, close to maritime, with a moderately warm summer and a rather long moderately cold winter. The average winter temperature is -8°C, the average summer temperature is +18°C. In dry hot weather the temperature may rise to +25°C... +30°C. The temperature may seriously drop in winter, reaching -25°C... -30°C. Precipitation reaches 634mm per year.
The Neva River is the city's main waterway. The name of the river derives from the ancient name
of Lake Ladoga, the Neva wherer it begins. The Neva is 74 km long, flowing 32 km within the city boundaries. The average with of the Neva within the city is 600 meters, depth - up to 24 meters. In the delta the Neva splits into three main branches: the Bolshaya Neva, the Malaya Neva and the Bolshaya Nevka. The city is located on the hanks of the Neva and about 100 rivers, canals and straits. Water constitutes 1/10th of the area of the city.
The abundance of islands has led to the construction of a multitude of bridges. Of these, nowadays there are 308 within the city proper, and 534 if suburbs are included. 22 of the bridges are drawbridges. The total length of all the bridges is about 16 kilometers. The longest bridge across the Neva is the Alexander Nevsky Bridge (909 meters with runways), the widest bridge is the Siniy Bridge on the Moika River (99.5 meters).
Saint Petersburg stands on the 47 islands of the Neva Delta. The biggest islands are Vasilievsky and Petrogradsky. Floods occur frequently in the city Most often they happen in autumn due to strong westerly winds. In the history of the city the Neva has risen above the ordinary level more than 300 times. The biggest flood was on November 7 1824 when the water rose 4.1 metros above the ordinary level.
Transport. Ground public transport
Buses, trolley-buses and trams work 6:00 a.m. to midnight. The fares are paid by tickets which can he bought from the conductor. You can also purchase a monthly card for a given type of transport, or a single card for all types of transport. Stops are marked with special signs in the city Municipal taxies work round the clock. You can hire a taxi at a stop, or just hail it by lifting a hand, provided the stop is permitted in that place. The fares are shown by the counter.

Metro
The Metro of St. Petersburg consists of 5 lines with 67 stations. The metro works from 5.45 a.m. till 12.00 p.m. To ride the metro one has to buy a token that costs 20 rubles (is valid for the hole ride) or plastic card for 10 20 30 or 60 rides. Tokens and plastic cards are sold at all Metro stations.

Air communications
Pulkovo Airport is one of the biggest quickly developing air transport points of Russia. In 2008
passenger traffic of Pulkovo Airport had a total enrolment of 7 070 000 people, which is 15,2% more than the activities of the twelve months of 2007. Infrastructure of Pulkovo Airport includes the aerodrome with two runways, two terminals, cargo terminal, fuel-supply complex, parking complex and other infrastructure objects.
Pulkovo Airport is within 15 km from the centre of Saint-Petersburg. You can easily get to the city («Moskovskaya» metro station is the nearest), using city bus or a shuttle bus. For those who prefer private transport the airport offers several parking options.

City buses
Shuttle bus # 39 constantly runs between Pulkovo 1 terminal and «Moskovskaya» metro station. Price — 24 roubles. The shuttle bus stop is opposite the exit from domestic flights Arrival zone of the sector «B».
To get to the city from Pulkovo 2 terminal one can take shuttle buses #3, #13, #113. Their stop is closer to arrivals hall. The stop which is closer to departures hall is for the buses to Aviagorodok.
Shuttle bus #13 goes along Pulkovo highway from the airport to «Moskovskaya» metro station, the price is 24 roubles.

Rail transport
St. Petersburg has a broad network of rail transport. In St. Petersburg there are five railway stations that comprehensively provide for the needs of passengers and freight shippers. For the convenience of passengers there are new ticket offices equipped to the highest European standards, business-centers, cafes, restaurants, rest rooms and waiting rooms. All five stations are located on one metro line greatly easing the transfer process.
